THE INVESTMENTS A SEED COMPANY SHOULD MAKE NOWADAYS TO OVERCOME MODERN CHALLENGES

Plant breeding is one of the main paths to take if we want to improve both our nutrition and global health.

The reasons why SAIS is focused on creating new plant varieties, and therefore investing substantial resources in the department of Research and Development, are connected to the need and desire to overcome the challenges of modern agriculture and to offer solutions to farmers and dealers.

For example, one of the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations is to “end hunger and achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture” (SDG n. 2, link reference: https://unstats.un.org/sdgs/report/2019/goal-02/). This goal is highly linked to the agricultural world and the work of seed companies. Despite the major progress of the past decade, serious concerns remain about the nutrition and health situation throughout the developing world. An estimated 805 million people still go hungry while 2.1 billion people worldwide are obese and overweight. This is exactly why we neednew plant varieties. By doing so, we provide more healthy and tasty alternative to a richer diet; we satisfy both the quality European standards and the increasing demand by making affordable products available all year around and therefore, we contribute to overcome the difficult challenge of food hunger and malnutrition.

The focus on plant breeding is important mainly because a scientific approach to plant breeding has resulted in success due to an extraordinary acceleration of progress but surely there is so much more that we can achieve to benefit from the advantages of agriculture and maximize its potential in order to improve nutrition and health.

In conclusion, it is important to see how the European seed sector is committed to live up to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) by the United Nations, and in doing so, working on food quality by exceeding standards; creating new job positions and keeping an high competitive sector; standing up for the planet by caring for sustainability and environmental goals.
