SPRING IS COMING ON SAIS VEGETABLE SEED CROPS !
The winter season is almost over and every day we see the days getting longer and in our crop fields the plants starting to move.
The winter 2025/2026 in Italy was characterized by constant rains approximately in all of our production areas, but also by low temperatures and snowfall.
The low temperatures brought benefits such as improving the soil’s condition after the frosts, vernalization for cruciferous and reducing microbial and insect charge that infest our crops.
Rainfall has slowed down recently and temperatures are rising during the day, remaining cool during the dark hours.
Crops sown in autumn are feeling changes in temperature and photoperiod, starting to show early flower buds and entering the bolting phase.
We’re referring specifically to all the brassicas: cabbage, rapes, turnips, and rocket. Depending on the species and the area, they are bolting more or less quickly.
Driven by temperature and light also peas, broad beans, carrots, chicory, and onions are beginning their vegetative growth period.
In addition, to keeping our crop fields vigorous and healthy, we’re working on preparing the soil for the spring plantings that are just beginning.
These will open the door to sowing: spring peas, radishes, dill, onions for bulb production that will be transplanted for next season’s seed production, and, in warmer areas like southern Italy, even chickpeas.
Each seed that we sow during this period has different needs in terms of soil preparation, sowing machinery, fertilization, and measures to facilitate the emergence and healthy growth of the small sprouted plants.
This is why each production field is unique and requires care and assistance, which we passionately provide to our farmers from the beginning of the production cycle.
